Chicago Public Schools: Data Visualizations

Explore student performance, demographics, and school-level insights across Chicago's public education system.

ISAT Exceeding % Comparison

This bar chart compares the percentage of students exceeding ISAT standards in math and reading across all Chicago public schools. Each pair of bars represents a school’s performance.

This graph shows that in general, Chicago schools have higher math scores than reading scores, which is interesting. Also, the majority of schools are below 50% in both math and reading, which shows that public schools in Chicago are in general below the average, which is not a good sign. It also shows that there are significantly more elementary schools than high schools, but there are very few middle schools within the data set, which is interesting.

Top-Performing Schools

This chart focuses on schools where more than 50% of students exceeded standards in both subjects. It provides a spotlight on academic excellence.

This visualization shows the handful of schools that exceeded standards. Most of these schools have prestigious names that include "Gifted", "Academy", "Classical", or "Magnet". Also, only a handful of high schools show up in the data set overall, so high schools are over-represented in this data set of overachieving schools.

Safety and Instruction Scores by School ID

This chart visualizes the schools by their safety (x) and instruction (y) scores, with the color representing their school ID number. We wondered whether the school ID number would have any effect, but there seems to be no significant trend there. What we did find is that there were many more schools with high-level safety scores (95%+) than instruction scores, and a handful of schools chose not to submit their scores. Safety scores average around 50-60, which is not good, and instruction scores are even lower, which combined, these two probably create the poor test scores

Income, Districts, and Test Scores

This visualization highlights the instruction and safety scores when compared to the location of the school. While there were no clear correlations, we found that the Morth and Northwest schools had higher scores in general than the South side schools.

Demographic Visualizations

Demographic visualizations are important because it helps us understand trends that in this case tie racial background with different neighborhoods, incomes, and populations. When the data correlates strongly, then we can look further to prevent possible systemic injustices to solve these problems.
